US blizzard sees private jet demand increase

With more than 7,500 flights cancelled and many more delayed, travel to and from the Northeast of the USA is experiencing severe disruption due to snow and blizzard conditions.

And as we see with any major disruption to airlines, demand has increased for private jet flight prices and bookings.

With the majority of airline flights cancelled, the private jet market remains operational. Airports are open and private charter aircraft are available, giving the agility to fly around weather conditions – and resume flights quickly once airports reopen.

At PrivateFly we’re certainly seeing increases in private jet enquiries and bookings – both for domestic flights within the USA and for longer transatlantic journeys, including those to and from London and Paris.

Weather conditions are making things more difficult and the situation is changing all the time. Safety is of course the key issue and when it’s not safe to fly, private aircraft can’t operate either.

But private jet schedules can change at short notice and remain flexible, using ten times more airports than commercial airlines – so flights are able to resume immediately once it’s safe to do so and when airports reopen. Airlines can take days to recover as their aircraft are out of position. So with any form of travel disruption, private aviation usually sees an uplift in demand both during the disruption and afterwards.

In the last 48 hours, we have booked many more flights in the USA than normal, for those who have to travel – particularly those who are occasional private aviation users or premium ticket airline customers. Our flight search volumes on the website and app have risen +230% for departures or arrivals using Northeast USA airports, including routes such as New York to Florida, Philadelphia to Washington.

While we are seeing most uplift within the USA, we have also booked more international flights than normal, including business flights to and from London and Paris to New York to various locations along the East coast – following the cancellation of many commercial airline flights from Europe to the US.
