Pilots name their favourite travel destinations

Pilots are the most frequent of travellers. So who better to ask for destination and travel tips?

Last year we surveyed over a thousand pilots, and one of the things we asked them was their favourite places to travel. This was part of our PrivateFly Pilot Survey – a detailed look at travel habits and backgrounds, and how today’s professional aviators are feeling about their jobs.

So how well-travelled are pilots?

On average the pilots surveyed told us they had visited an average of 25 countries in their lifetime. But this varied according to location, with 18 the average for those in US & Canada, and 38 for those in Europe.

The most well-travelled pilot had visited 190 countries, with 4% having travelled to 100 or more countries. At the other end of the spectrum, almost a quarter (24%) said they have visited only 5 countries or less and 2% have only ever stayed in one country.

Pilots’ favourite travel destinations

When asked about their favourite travel destinations, pilots named a diverse range of places. Europe was the most popular answer overall, with 7% of pilots saying this – led by North American pilots. They were also more likely to name specific European cities, such as Paris.

When it comes to the most popular destinations, the countries named by most were Australia and New Zealand, with Paris the top-rated city. Paris was the only named city to make it into the Top 10 most popular destinations. The next most popular cities were London and New York.

These were pilots’ Top 10 travel destinations:

  • Europe
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • USA
  • Italy
  • Hawaii
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • Ireland
  • Paris

More findings from the PrivateFly Pilot Survey

The PrivateFly Pilot Survey 2017 also asked pilots about their travel tips and what they carry in their bag. Some of the findings were surprising – you can find out more in our previous blog post: What do pilots carry in their flight bags?
