RAF100: PrivateFly is proud to sponsor the RAF’s centenary album
Last week I was invited to attend the official celebrations for the RAF’s centenary in London – and what a special and memorable day it was. At PrivateFly we’re extremely proud of our Royal Air Force links, and to be one of the patrons of the official commemorative album.
July 10th was a historic day of celebrations, including a parade of personnel, and a huge flypast by one hundred RAF aircraft from the past century at 13.00. This was watched by thousands of spectators lining The Mall and the area around Buckingham Palace, and broadcast live on the BBC.
It was fantastic to be there and truly an awe-inspiring sight – the biggest gathering of aircraft in the skies over London since the WW2 victory celebrations of 1946.
As an ex-RAF pilot myself, it meant a lot to be there, and was an opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends from my time in the service. I spent 20 years flying the C-130 Hercules before moving into business aviation, and I’ve drawn on my military roots in so many ways over the years, both in terms of my personal leadership style and in many aspects of running PrivateFly.
The whole event was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the RAF, and of the organisations around the world that owe much of their success to the service.
The official hardback book, entitled 100 Years of the RAF, was officially launched on the day. Created with limited-edition red, white and blue covers, it features a wide selection of breathtaking imagery from the RAF Museum’s extensive archives and will be distributed via major RAF100 events and networks, and to dignitaries around the world.
PrivateFly is one of 100 business patrons (including Boeing, Airbus, Rolls Royce and Marks & Spencer) and we’re profiled in a double page feature, charting our business story since we launched in 2008. We also took part in a video documentary to make the occasion, talking about our reasons for supporting the album, and our links with the RAF.
