World Cup travellers look forward to a winning view (as well as the football)

Brazil’s airports are gearing up for their busiest ever period – as football fans from all over the world arrive in the country for the FIFA World Cup 2014.

With just days to go, unprecedented numbers of aircraft of all types – airline flights, private jets and helicopters – are already arriving. Special conditions are in place at most airports for private jet flights, meaning more advance planning is required. See previous post Brazil’s airports hot up for FIFA World Cup.

Those arriving in the main host city, Rio de Janeiro, also have an extra reason to get excited. As their aircraft begins its final descent into Rio de Janeiro International Airport, they will enjoy one of the world’s top ten most stunning landings, according to our recent poll.

We asked international travel experts and travel fans for their favourite scenic airport landing in our annual survey. Major names in the travel industry helped form the 2014 shortlist for the public vote including Bill Prince, deputy editor of GQ magazine; Murdo Morrison, editor of Flight International; David Scowsill, President of the World Travel and Tourism Council; and Patrick Jephson – author, pilot and former equerry to Diana, Princess of Wales.

The views on landing at Rio de Janeiro received high praise from voters. One commented on the “wonderful combination of rock formation, beaches, forest and city”.

Another said “the view of The Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Guanabara Bay are breathtaking and you land almost on an ‘aircraft carrier’ runway”.

Rio viewed from the air truly is a world class view, a spectacular feast for the eyes. See more images and find out which other airports made this year’s Top 10 Airport Approaches results 2014.
