PrivateFly clients jet in for The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz
At the end of January each year, elite spectators and private jet travellers fly in from all over the world to watch one of the world's most spectacular sporting events - The Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
This year saw the 39th edition of the competition and the third time that PrivateFly's sister company Flexjet has been an official sponsor, once again headlining one of the six world-class polo teams battling it out for the trophy on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, against the stunning backdrop of Switzerland’s Engadine Valley. We were delighted to invite PrivateFly Jet Card clients to join us for the occasion.
High drama on the polo field
Over the three days, the six polo teams - each comprised of four of the world's top polo players and their elite ponies - battled it out against the others. Team Flexjet was comprised of captain Marc Ganzi, alongside Santos Bollini, Martín Jauregui and Fred Mannix and they played with passion and commitment, providing plenty of thrills for the capacity crowd of over 25,000, who enjoyed the glittering spectacle under blue skies and sparkling sunshine.
In fact the glorious sunshine bathing the valley saw this year's event take a revised format as, despite the usual sustained period of low temperatures leading up to the competition, the playing surface was unpredictable. This led the organisers to make the decision to schedule a series of highly skilled penalty shootouts, instead of the usual four chukka matches.
While shorter in duration, there was certainly no lack of excitement, as each team member took turns to strike, first from 30 yards, then again from the even more challenging distance of 50 yards.
The action culminated in a nail-biting final on the Sunday, between Team The Kusnacht Practice and Team Mackage. With six goals apiece at half time, the final few penalty shots saw both teams matching each other, goal for goal, before Team Mackage ultimately claimed the trophy with a close 10:9 victory.
VIP hospitality in St. Moritz
Alongside the polo, PrivateFly guests and other elite spectators were welcomed into the delightful atmosphere of the VIP tent, with Flexjet’s European team on hand to welcome guests to a dedicated lounge area, and to offer champagne, coffee, and a delicious lunch paired with fine wines.
After the sun went down, they were also invited to join our team for private, curated dinners in some of St. Moritz’s most exclusive venues, including the famous nightspot Dracula; a private dining experience with Michelin-starred Chef Mauro Colagreco; and the official Snow Polo World Cup gala dinner.
Private flights to Samedan - the heart of the action
While St. Moritz is over three hours by road from the closest commercial airports in Zurich and Milan, private jet travellers are able to land at Samedan Airport (LSZS), a dedicated private gateway just a short drive from St. Moritz.
The airport was certainly kept busy over the course of the event, with PrivateFly clients and other elite travellers arriving for the Snow Polo and making the most of their time in St. Moritz and the surrounding area.
