London City Airport announces £400M expansion plans as it celebrates 30th birthday
Today is the 30th anniversary of London City Airport‘s first commercial flight. And to mark the milestone the airport has published artist’s impressions of its terminal redesign, part of a £400M redevelopment plan due for completion in 2021.
When it opened in 1987, London City was the UK’s first new airport in 40 years. And it has gone on to become a firm favourite with business travellers (using both airlines and private jets) due to its proximity to central London – just 3 miles from Canary Wharf and 5 miles from the City.
Its popularity means it struggles to meet demand. So in addition to its terminal facelift, the development plans will enable 30,000 additional flights per year, with plans for seven new aircraft stands and a parallel taxiway to maximise runway capacity.
The work – due to start next year – is expected to create over 2,000 jobs and generate an additional £750m per year for the UK economy. The airport is also constructing the UK’s first digital air traffic control tower, operational in 2019.
London City Airport’s Jet Centre
London City Airport’s Jet Centre is the most central gateway for private jet passengers travelling in or out of London, with 12,000 private flights being handled at the airport since 1987.
Its location is unrivalled, and its speed and efficiency are world class: A 90-second promise for landings and departures means you can move through the airport in just a minute and a half – ready to step onboard your waiting jet.
However this does all come at an additional cost to other London private jet airports. With no aircraft based at the airport, the cost of repositioning plus the airport’s higher landing fees mean it is a more expensive option than London Luton, London Biggin Hill and others.
But when speed and a central location are top priorities, many customers are happy to pay a premium.
