PrivateFly To Scotland – Every Vote Counted

In the United Kingdom and across the world, the news has been dominated today by the Scottish referendum results. As a proud Scot myself, but living in London, I like other ‘expat Scots’ was not given a vote. I agree with that; as this was a matter for Scots in Scotland and for the other UK citizens who have committed to live there.

The referendum voting turnout has been amazingly with 85% of eligible voters making their vote count. This debate has energised a nation in politics. With the polls showing it was too close to call beforehand, both the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ campaigns urged supporters to the polling station.

At PrivateFly, we flew a group of 6 Scots back home from a holiday in Malaga to Aberdeen yesterday, to enable them to vote before they returned to their holiday. There wasn’t a direct airline route for this journey, so it would have taken them at least 12 hours by scheduled airline (each way) and the loss of 2 days of their holiday.

The group chartered a Learjet 45 with PrivateFly for the 3 hour flight, which worked out at just over £3000 per seat (£18,000 for the aircraft). So at £3K per vote, this was true commitment for participating in the most important day in over 300 years of Scotland’s history.

As many UK business leaders are, I’m happy that Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom, but also reflective about the large numbers of my fellow Scots that want independence.

It’s clear we are going to see some big changes ahead, in how the UK is run. But for today at PrivateFly and throughout the UK, it’s business as usual.
