Why Our Clients Love Mid-Size Jets

Mid-size jets are always popular in the American charter market, and we’ve seen an increase recently for these aircraft.

While heavy jets clad with glamorous celebrities tend to steal the spotlight, it’s the mid-size jet that comprise the heart of the private aviation charter market.

The Citation XLS is a popular mid-size jet.

Indeed our own Q3 Private Jet Charter Trend Report saw an increase in flights for mid-size jets, like the popular Hawker 800.

With recent developments that indicate a move towards further investment into the midsize category among manufacturers, it seems that 2019 and beyond will be the time for mid-size jets to shine.

We take a look at the overall popularity for the category, and what makes these aircraft stand out for private jet charter:

1) Mid-size Jets Fit the US Landscape

Figuratively and literally, midsize jets are well suited to the United States in terms of average range & airport capacity. They can comfortably carry a C-suite team cross-country without incurring the cost of a heavy jet.

They also have better performance and handling that allows them to land at airports that heavy jets often cannot accommodate.

2) By the Numbers

Statistics don’t lie; there has been a year-over-year increase of 39% in demand for mid-size jets from 2017 to 2018 in the US.

The most frequent routes in that period were New York (TEB) to Miami (OPF) and New York (TEB) to Los Angeles (VNY).

But the taste for mid-size jets doesn’t stop in the US; even Europe has seen a surge of popularity for models such as the Hawker 800 and Citation XLS.

3) Manufacturers Responding

Manufacturers are responding accordingly. Just this year Embraer unveiled the newest of its mid-size models, the Praetor 500 and Praetor 600. As updated versions of the popular Legacy 450 and 500, these jets feature longer ranges and heightened performance that make them even more well-suited to the most popular American routes.

The unique interior of the Praetor models and sleek exteriors has long been a hallmark for Embraer.

Cessna has also followed suit, with its continued development of the Citation Longitude. First unveiled at EBACE in 2012, the Longitude is finally seeing its first deliveries.

4) Popularity Among Leisure Travelers Too

While mid-size jets are easily popular among business travelers, even those flying for leisure have noticed the efficiency offered.

The performance means that for a family of 6, everyone can travel in the cabin together comfortably (without the price tag of a heavy jet). The larger baggage holds mean that not only can the whole family travel together, but so can their luggage.

Especially for clients flying to a ski resort or a golf course, these baggage holds can accommodate their own gear without compromising any luxuries in-cabin.
