5 flights this week – when it’s not just A to B

In airline travel, the majority of flights are from A to B and back again. But itineraries can get a lot more complex with private aviation, which is set up to offer bespoke routings.

That might mean a one-way journey to fit around other travel plans; a 2-leg return (but back to a different airport); a 3-leg flight; or a complex multi-leg with four or more flights (even involving a change of aircraft along the way).

So whether it’s just A to B, or to C, D and E, these are some of the more unusual routings (and prices) keeping our Flight Team on their toes this week.

MYKONOS WITH A PARIS DROP-OFF

The beauty of private aviation is that you can make a last minute change to an itinerary, if plans change.

This client was travelling to Mykonos from London, for a 4-day break, and initially the flight was booked as a simple out and return.

But while the client was in Mykonos, he arranged to drop a couple of friends back to Paris on the flight home. It was a simple change to the flight booking and plan for our team, to add the brief stop there on the way back to London.

3 COUNTRIES IN 2 DAYS

This business client wanted to fly from his home in Southampton to Geneva, arriving late morning for a lunchtime meeting. Then to fly to Brussels that evening to meet a client for the evening and an overnight stay, while the aircraft waited for him at Brussels airport. The following morning he flew to Paris, where he was speaking at an industry conference. Before flying back home to Southampton later in the afternoon.

These are all short flights and he was flying alone, so he chose to use a cost-effective Citation Mustang small jet.

SCOTTISH ISLAND STOPOVER

Barra is a famously scenic landing, the only commercial runway in the world which is regularly wiped away by the tide (see this and other stunning landings featured in Top 10 Scenic Airports 2016 poll results).

Being situated on an island in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, it’s pretty remote too. So for to experience it, you’ll need to use an aircraft suitable for the terrain, such as a BN2 Islander. And as you wouldn’t generally choose this aircraft for a longer journey, a multi-leg private charter itinerary to Barra will usually involve a change of aircraft at Glasgow or Inverness airports.

This particular client lives in Paris and was visiting Scotland for a week’s holiday, with a few days travelling by car around the country’s mainland, with an overnight trip to Barra. So for the return flights from Paris to Edinburgh, we recommended an Embraer Phenom 100, with a switch to a BN2 Islander for the overnight return flight from Glasgow to Barra.

  • Paris Le Bourget – Edinburgh (7-night return) in an Embraer Phenom 100 (4 seats)
  • Glasgow – Barra (overnight return) in a BN2 Islander (8 seats)
  • Price: €19,600

ITALIAN TOUR

A US-based client was already in the South of France, and wanted to visit two different parts of Italy for a holiday with his partner, before flying back to London, from where they were booked on an airline flight back to Chicago.

Firstly they flew from Nice to Naples, in the South of Italy, to spend a week on the nearby Amalfi coast. Then into Olbia for another week on the famously beautiful Italian island, before flying onto London, ready for their trip back to the US.

  • Aircraft: Embraer Phenom 100 (4 seats)

ONE WAY FLIGHT TO IBIZA

Not all flights are multi-leg. Sometimes a client will only want to fly one-way, and this can be an ideal opportunity to look for an empty leg. These are repositioning flights, where the aircraft is already flying in empty to a specific destination, to pick up a set of passengers.

This client was looking to travel one-way from Barcelona to Ibiza at short notice. With so many private jets moving in and out of Ibiza during the summer peak, there are often empty legs to be found, and our Flight Team were able to identify one leaving later the same day, saving the client a 40% discount on the standard charter price for that aircraft.

(To search for latest empty legs download the PrivateFly app.)

  • Barcelona – Ibiza (one way)
  • Citation Mustang (4 seats)
  • Empty leg price: €1,900 (RRP €3,200)
