What height (altitude) do private jets fly at?
A private jet can fly at a height of up to 45,000 ft, though most cruise at 41,000 ft.
By flying higher than a typical airline flight (36,000 ft), a private jet can fly faster and reduce congestion. An aircraft’s maximum altitude is called its service ceiling.
A private jet pilot will choose the optimum cruising altitude depending on the distance of the journey.
As a rule of thumb you cross a zero off the distance in miles to calculate the optimum altitude in feet. So if you are flying 100 miles, you cross off the last zero (10) and then multiply by 1,000, giving am optimum altitude of 10,000 ft.
